Ice makers operate on five basic principles. Fill, circulate, freeze, harvest, drain.

Fill- Is there water available to make ice? Is there enough water in ice maker reservoir?

Circulate- Does the circulation pump run after the fill. Water must run evenly and continuously over the frozen plate.

Freeze- Does the frozen plate get frosty and is the frost pattern even?

Harvest- Once the ice is formed, a sensor will send a signal to the control to go into defrost mode. At this point the frosty plate warms up, dropping the ice. Some machines harvest cubes directly, others harvest ice sheets, which are then cut into cubes on a grid cutter.

Drain- Ice machines use a lot of water. It is necessary that there be an adequate drain system available and that the drain be operating freely. Water backing up melts ice.

Clothes dryer function:

Dryers work as the result of three basic things. Those three things are heat, tumble, and air-flow.

Heat- Does the dryer get hotter than room temperature? Regular/heavy/cotton setting runs at a temperature of 150 degrees F. Permanent press is 135F. Gentle is 120F.

Tumble- Does the dryer drum go around or tumble? Air-flow- Very important and often overlooked is air-flow. This carries the heat and humidity out of the clothes and to the outside of the building. Without proper 4 inches of air flow through the exhaust pipe, your clothes will take too long to dry. Lack of sufficiant air-flow also causes rapid wear and tear to dryer components. Check air-flow by going to the outside of the building while the dryer is running and feel how much wind is blowing out of the exhaust vent. Also watch for crushed duct material behind dryer.

There are many washer brands and styles available today, front load and top load. All operate on thesame four basic principles. Fill, agitate, drain and spin.

Fill- hot, warm, cold fill. Is the water filling fast enough and to the proper level?

Agitate- the actual ‘wash’ cycle.

Drain- until the water drains, the machine wont spin, or in some cases wont unlock or will shut down the control system. Many washer problems are associated with draining. The washer must drain quickly and completely.

Spin- spin is accomplished by centrifugal extraction which removes the water from the clothes by squeezing them against the inner tub wall. The water continues to be removed by the pump during the entire spin cycle. Washers that don’t spin well finish the wash cycle too wet.
